Your Golf Won’t Improve… Until Your Body Does

By Chris Kendall and Derek Domaleski,

Do you feel like your golf game is stuck in a cycle of one step forward, two steps back? Are you finding that swing changes may work for one round or one week, but aren’t building blocks to a better game? Has your handicap ever improved significantly? You might be surprised to learn that golf doesn’t have to be this way. You may be more surprised to learn that golf fitness may be the answer!

Since we are new to this space in Golf Chicago, let us introduce ourselves. We are not just golf professionals… nor just fitness professionals. We are both. This unique combination allows Dynamic Golf Institute to offer the most comprehensive golf training program in Chicagoland. By coalescing fitness with golf instruction, DGI students are enjoying successes they’ve never experienced before.

Golf fitness is NOT just for pros. Golfers continue to invest heavily in golf equipment and lessons when the more likely barrier to improvement is physical limitations. Did you know that 65% of golfers are physically unable to maintain their posture throughout a golf swing?

The golf swing is much more physically challenging than given credit for. Most golfers we see have acute physical limitations that inhibit proper swing mechanics. These limitations not only ruin golf scores, but can lead to injuries. We perform a golf-specific physical, called the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) screen, on all of our students. This testing allows us to objectively measure each golfer’s improvement in our program. Substantial gains in stability, mobility, balance and body/club awareness will be achieved.

The Overhead Deep Squat is a revealing test you can do at home. Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder width apart, toes forward. Next grab a club, or stretch pole, and hold it about a half foot wider than the width of your shoulders, arms extended overhead with club behind you. Slowly squat as low as possible with the club high overhead. Keep your heels on the ground. Finally, while keeping the club high, return to a standing position. Let’s shoot for ten repetitions. How did you do?

Golfers unable to perform the Overhead Deep Squat properly will undoubtedly struggle to maintain their golf posture (remember 65% of golfers can’t maintain proper posture throughout their swing!) If you struggle with the Overhead Deep Squat—you’re likely rising out of posture during the swing (this is very easy to see on video from behind the golfer). This swing fault might happen at the beginning of the backswing, during transition and/or during the downswing—with the action of thrusting the lower body towards the golf ball, while rising up, being most common during the downswing prior to impact.
